Fine 18th Century portrait of a gentleman wearing a blue day cap, believed to be John Gay, the poet. Old label on verso reads "John Gay the Poet" 1685 - 1732
Attributed to Willem Verelst, flourished 1685 - 1732.
The Verelsts were an illustrious family of Dutch emerge painters. Willem died at St Christopher le Stocks, London in 1752.
John Gay was one of England's most celebrated poets and dramatists (born 30th June 1685 died 4th December 1732).
Probably the original carved gilt wood frame
