Based on the headed paper used for this drawing it was clearly made during Spencer’s time working for the Royal Army Medical Corps. Based in Salonica (modern day Thessaloniki in Grece) during the First World war. His experiences on the Macedonian front would inform his greatest and best known work, The Sandham Memorial Chapel at Burghclere.
